Poliklinika Barbelplastic and general surgery in Zagreb
Poliklinika Barbel in Zagreb has been operating since 2000 and today is also a private day hospital for plastic and general surgery. At Pavla Štoosa 28, our surgical and anaesthesia team is by your side from the first examination to recovery.
If you do not know what the procedure you need is called, start here. Choose a part of the body, then the condition you recognise. Each condition has its own page: what is happening, what can be done and who does it.
Poliklinika Barbel has four specialist consulting rooms, two operating theatres, a recovery unit, its own central sterilisation unit and central gas supply, and equipment for emergency interventions and resuscitation.
This means the patient does not go to one place for the examination, another for the operation and a third for the results. When the doctor judges it necessary and agrees this with you, you spend the night after the procedure at the clinic: in a room in the recovery unit, with a nurse beside you all night and a doctor on call.
“Here I got the impression that they are a really good, well-coordinated team, that they approach each patient individually and get to know them. […] During recovery everyone followed my condition and progress, so that in case of any negative reaction they could respond as soon as possible.”

“I had major surgery three days ago and today I feel great […] Dr. Matleković, the anaesthetist without whom this would not have been possible […] And of course nurse Martina and the other nurses, first-class staff”

“A problem I had been dragging around for half a year […] Dr. Kinčl eliminated in an hour. He got me fully functional in literally two weeks, and within a month I was back to all my usual sports activities”

“Exceptionally kind staff, very understanding, and they give the patient time both before and after the operation. They are constantly available with plenty of advice. They dispel every doubt with carefully chosen words and are thorough in the preoperative procedure.”

“Dr. Kincl is truly a wonderful man and an excellent professional. Patient, funny and always ready to explain everything you want to know. Nurse Martina too, always available and very approachable in communication.”

“[…] it's been 9 weeks now and the breasts have already softened up, the swelling is down, the scars are barely visible […] they kept close contact throughout the whole process, which meant a lot for me.”

“I come back again and again! Phenomenal Dr. Kincl and the whole team. A few weeks ago I had an eyelid and brow lift and the result is phenomenal, the scars are invisible! My recommendation to everyone!”

“The whole staff, including the anaesthetist Dražen, the two nurses Martina and nurse Tea, do everything to make you feel relaxed and, most importantly, in safe hands. I expected a good result, but it turned out even better than that.”

The anaesthetist is a permanent member of the Poliklinika Barbel team
AnaesthetistThe anaesthetist at Poliklinika Barbel is Dr. Dražen Matleković, a specialist in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care.
The same doctor, throughoutThe doctor who examines you before the procedure and knows your results, medicines and allergies is the same one who gives you the anaesthesia and monitors you as you wake up.
Included in the priceAnaesthesia is included in the price of most operations.
01Does the surgeon have a licence to practise, and for which specialty was it issued?
The licence is issued by the Croatian Medical Chamber (Hrvatska liječnička komora) and can be checked. “Aesthetic surgeon” is not the name of a specialty — ask which specialty the licence was issued for and whether it covers the procedure you are planning.
02Who gives the anaesthesia, and are they present throughout the procedure?
Regional and general anaesthesia may be given only by specialists in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care.
03Where is the procedure carried out, and what does that facility have if something goes differently from the plan?
Equipment for emergency interventions and resuscitation, a recovery unit, central gas supply.
04If you need to stay overnight after the procedure, where do you stay and who is with you?
At Poliklinika Barbel you stay overnight when the doctor judges it necessary and agrees this with the patient. The night is then spent in a room in the recovery unit; a nurse is with the patient all night and a doctor is on call.
05What is included in the price, and what is paid separately?
The price of the procedure includes anaesthesia, check-ups with the surgeon during the first three months, and dressing changes. Paid separately are the examination by the surgeon and the anaesthetist before the procedure, laboratory tests and ECG when they are needed, and histopathological analysis, except where the price list states that it is included in the price of the procedure.
06What happens if the result is not as agreed, and who then carries out the correction?
The result is assessed at a check-up, once the swelling has gone down and the scar has matured. The final appearance also depends on body build, skin quality and habits such as smoking, alcohol or returning to physical activity too early. If the result differs from what was agreed, the same surgeon carries out the correction.
07Is the facility registered, and under which regulations is it accountable?
In the EU, patient rights and the rules on implants apply to every procedure; outside the EU, this protection depends on the regulations of that country.
Head nurse Martina Šereg answers messages. She will gladly answer your questions and arrange the date of your first examination.
The first examination lasts 30 to 45 minutes on average. The surgeon examines the area you are concerned about, asks about illnesses, medicines and earlier operations, and talks with you about what you expect. If a procedure is appropriate and likely to help, you receive a plan: which procedure is proposed, under which anaesthesia, what recovery looks like and what is included in the price. If a procedure is not needed, you will hear that at the examination too. What happens at the first examination?
