How many visits does one procedure need?

The process involves three steps, all of which take place in Zagreb: the surgeon's examination, the anaesthetic assessment and the procedure itself. For patients from outside Zagreb we schedule the surgeon's examination and the anaesthetic assessment on the same day, with blood tests too if needed, so as a rule there are two visits: the first for the examination and the assessment, the second for the procedure.

After the procedure you stay in the recovery unit. When the doctor judges it necessary and this is agreed with you, you also stay overnight; a nurse is then with you all night, and a doctor is on call. The overnight stay and care during the night are included in the price of the procedure. The anaesthetist at Poliklinika Barbel is a full-time member of staff. Check-ups take place in the clinic and the first three months are included in the price of the procedure, as are dressing changes.

After sedation and general anaesthesia you should not drive for the first 24 hours, so the journey home is planned for the next day or with someone accompanying you.

Check-ups take place in Zagreb

Check-ups after the procedure take place at Poliklinika Barbel, with the surgeon who performed the procedure. The first three months are included in the price of the procedure.

How long do you stay after the procedure?

After general anaesthesia the patient stays at Poliklinika Barbel for at least six hours, and longer if needed. After larger procedures the doctor may, in agreement with you, arrange one or two nights in the clinic. You spend those nights in a recovery unit room, which has a bed, a television and a bathroom.

After sedation and general anaesthesia you should not drive for the first 24 hours. If you are travelling, this means that returning the same day in your own car is not feasible, and that transport is arranged in advance.

If you are coming with someone, the nurses can help you organise accommodation for them and answer practical questions about arriving and returning.

How long recovery takes and what it depends on is explained on the page Recovery after surgery, and what happens after anaesthesia on the page Anaesthesia.

Head nurse Martina Šereg answers messages. She will gladly answer your questions and arrange the date of your first examination.

The first examination lasts 30 to 45 minutes on average. The surgeon examines the area you are concerned about, asks about illnesses, medicines and earlier operations, and talks with you about what you expect. If a procedure is appropriate and likely to help, you receive a plan: which procedure is proposed, under which anaesthesia, what recovery looks like and what is included in the price. If a procedure is not needed, you will hear that at the examination too. What happens at the first examination?
