Condition
Tummy after childbirth
Skin that has not tightened again, separated abdominal muscles and a caesarean section scar — which of these clear up by themselves and which do not.
Why doesn't my tummy look the same after childbirth?
During pregnancy the abdominal wall stretches on three levels, and each recovers at its own pace.
The skin stretches and its elastic fibres are partly changed for good. How much it pulls back depends on age, genetics and how much and how fast it was stretched.
The abdominal muscles — the two rectus abdominis muscles (the "six-pack" muscles) that run down the middle of the abdomen — move apart sideways, and the band of connective tissue between them becomes thinner and wider.
The fatty tissue under the skin changes its distribution, often even after your weight has gone back to what it was before pregnancy.
That is why some of the changes pull back by themselves over months and some do not — and this does not depend on effort but on which level is affected.
What is diastasis and how is it checked?
Diastasis is the gap between the two rectus abdominis muscles (the "six-pack" muscles), caused by stretching of the band of connective tissue that joins them.
You recognise it by a lengthwise bulge or dip that shows down the middle of the abdomen when you lift your head from lying down. It is often accompanied by a feeling of weakness in the abdominal wall, lower back pain and an abdomen that "puffs up" during the day.
Diastasis is measured by examination and ultrasound, not by how it looks.
When does exercise help, and when does it not?
Exercise strengthens muscles and changes the amount of fatty tissue. It does not shorten the stretched band of connective tissue and does not tighten skin that has lost its elasticity.
That is why a woman can return to her pre-pregnancy weight and the abdomen still sticks out or the skin still folds.
The caesarean section scar
A caesarean scar can stay pulled in, firmer than the surrounding skin, or with a fold of skin hanging over it. Sensitivity and numbness around the scar are expected in the first months.
The scar changes over months, and its final look is judged after six months.

When should I see a doctor?
It is worth coming for an examination if:
- a bulge or dip shows down the middle of the abdomen when you strain
- the abdominal wall is weak, and your back hurts
- the skin folds or hangs whatever your weight
- your caesarean scar hurts, is pulled in or bothers you
- you have noticed a bulge that appears when you strain and disappears when you lie down — this may be a hernia → Groin and umbilical hernia
What do we look at during the examination?
The examination is done standing and lying down. Lying down, with your head raised, the gap between the abdominal muscles is measured with the fingers: this is diastasis. Standing, we look at how much skin and fatty tissue there is, where the skin hangs, what the caesarean scar is like and whether there is a hernia at the navel or in the scar.
What can be done?
| Problem | Procedure | Also, in the same visit |
|---|---|---|
| The skin folds or hangs whatever your weight | Tummy tuck | Correction of diastasis through the same cut. A hernia at the navel is dealt with in the same procedure. The caesarean scar mostly falls within the area of skin that is removed anyway. |
| A bulge or dip shows down the middle of the abdomen when you strain; the abdominal wall is weak, your back hurts | Abdominal muscle diastasis correction | Removal of excess skin in the same procedure, through the same cut: one recovery instead of two. A hernia at the navel in the same operation. |
| The caesarean scar hurts, is pulled in or a fold of skin hangs over it | Scar revision | With a tummy tuck the old scar is cut out together with the excess skin, so a separate revision is not needed. |
| A bulge that appears when you strain and disappears when you lie down | Hernia surgery | With diastasis correction or a tummy tuck it is dealt with in the same operation, through the same cut. |
Specialist and team
Specialty: plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.
When the procedure is done under sedation or general anaesthesia, the anaesthesia is led by a specialist in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care who works full time at the clinic.
In the operating theatre, the surgeon is assisted by head nurse Martina Šereg, with the help of nurses Kristina Jurešić and Mateja Tomorad, and in recovery the care assistant Mirjana Kovačić is with you. Martina also looks after preparation, scheduling and contact after the procedure.
Who will operate is decided at the examination, based on the findings and the type of procedure. You know the name of the surgeon before the procedure and meet them at the examination.

Frequently asked questions
When after childbirth can I think about a procedure? At the earliest six months after childbirth and after breastfeeding has ended, when your weight is stable and the abdominal wall has stopped recovering by itself. With a caesarean, the scar must have fully matured. If you are planning more children, the procedure is as a rule postponed until you no longer plan a pregnancy.
How long does a tummy tuck take? A tummy tuck takes 3 to 4 hours, and abdominal muscle diastasis correction 2 to 3 hours. Both procedures are done under general anaesthesia.
How long is the recovery after a tummy tuck? Sick leave is as a rule 21 to 28 days, you can go out in public after 10 to 14 days, and you return to training after 6 to 8 weeks. The final result is seen after 6 to 12 months.
How much does a tummy tuck cost? The price depends on the extent of the procedure: a mini tummy tuck costs €3,000–4,000, and a tummy tuck with relocation of the navel €5,000–6,000. Diastasis correction costs €1,300–3,500, depending on whether the upper part, the lower part or the whole length is done. The price includes general anaesthesia, check-ups in the first three months and dressing changes; which procedure suits you is established at the examination.
How long do I wear a compression garment after a tummy tuck? As a rule six weeks. The garment reduces swelling and protects the stitching that joins the abdominal muscles, so it is not taken off before the doctor says so at a check-up.
Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck? Yes, the procedure is not an obstacle to pregnancy. A new pregnancy stretches the skin and muscles again and can partly undo the result, so the procedure is as a rule planned once you are no longer planning a pregnancy.
Is a tummy tuck a way to lose weight? No. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal wall, and body weight does not change significantly with it. That is why it is done when your weight is stable.
