Profhilo, PRP and microneedling

Three facial skin treatments without surgery: Profhilo is hyaluronic acid that hydrates and tightens the skin and does not give volume; PRP uses your own platelet-rich plasma; microneedling makes tiny punctures that stimulate skin renewal. They are done on their own or in combination.

What concerns does it address?

Profhilo

Hyaluronic acid that is injected at five points on each side of the face and spreads under the skin. It improves hydration and firmness of the skin, without adding volume. It is done in two treatments, a month apart.

PRP

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is a treatment with your own blood. 10–20 ml of blood is taken from a vein in the arm, as for a laboratory test. The blood is separated into layers in a centrifuge, and the plasma with platelets is separated out — platelets are cells that carry growth factors and start tissue renewal. This plasma is injected with a fine needle into the target area; before the injection the skin is numbed with a cream if needed. There is no foreign material.

The effect builds gradually, because the tissue responds to the plasma over weeks. That is why PRP is most often done as a series of two to three treatments four to six weeks apart, and then, if needed, once every six to twelve months. How many treatments make sense in your case is agreed at the examination.

Face, neck, hands and décolletage

PRP is injected into the skin to improve its quality: density, glow and fine lines. It does not give volume — fillers or fat transfer are used for that. It is often combined with microneedling, because the tiny punctures improve the penetration of the plasma, or with fat transfer, where the plasma is added to the fat tissue.

→ Facial fat transfer

Scalp

For thinning hair, PRP is injected into the scalp, where it stimulates hair follicles that are still working. It acts on hair that is thinning, not on an area where the follicles have gone — which is why the condition of the scalp is assessed at the examination before treatment. It is done as a series of three treatments, followed by maintenance.

Intimate area

When the lining of the vagina is thinner and drier — most often after childbirth or at the menopause — PRP is injected into the vaginal wall, on its own or together with fat transfer (your own fat tissue). The aim is a better blood supply and moisture of the lining. It is not a procedure for the width of the vaginal opening; there are surgical procedures for that. → Vaginoplasty · Intimate health — women

Microneedling

A device with fine needles makes tiny punctures in the skin that stimulate collagen formation. It is done in several treatments, with a numbing cream.

When is the procedure not suitable?

The treatments are not done during active skin inflammation, a cold sore or acne, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. PRP is not done in blood disorders or while you are taking blood-thinning medicines; Profhilo is not done with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid. They are not done over freshly tanned skin.

PRP is not done with a low platelet count or with an active malignant disease. PRP for joints and tendons (knee, shoulder) is not done at Poliklinika Barbel.

General reasons for postponing a procedure (pregnancy, breastfeeding, inflammation, a clotting disorder, smoking): When is a procedure postponed?

Anaesthesia

Before a procedure under general or regional anaesthesia, you are seen by the anaesthetist, who works full time at the clinic; the same doctor is also present during the procedure. The anaesthetic assessment and the anaesthesia for larger operations are included in the price of the procedure. What happens before, during and after anaesthesia is described on the Anaesthesia page.

Risks

Expected — redness and tiny bruises at the injection sites, in the first days.

Occasional — swelling that lasts a few days, temporary lumps at the site of Profhilo.

Expected, and rare but serious → Risks and complications: what is the course of healing, and what is a complication?

What happens at the examination?

Before the treatment there is an examination: the doctor examines the area, asks about illnesses, medicines and allergies, and talks with you about what you expect. How many treatments make sense in your case is agreed at the examination.

→ Examinations and diagnostics

What if the result is not as agreed?

The result of a procedure is assessed at a follow-up visit, once the swelling has gone down and the scar has matured, not in the first weeks. If it differs from what was agreed at the examination, the same surgeon carries out the correction.

Frequently asked questions

What can I expect, and what not? Better skin quality — smoothness, glow, fine lines, and with microneedling acne scars. They cannot tighten loose skin or restore volume; other procedures are used for that.

When is the result seen and how long does it last? In most people the effect lasts six to nine months, so the cycle is repeated.

Can I go straight back to work? Yes; the redness and tiny lumps from Profhilo go within hours to a day or two. On the same day, no make-up, sauna or sun.

Can an allergy occur? The plasma is your own, so an allergic reaction to it is not expected; a reaction to the numbing cream is possible.

When should you get in touch immediately?

These are the signs that distinguish a complication from expected healing. If any of them appears, contact the clinic the same day, without waiting for the check-up:

How to choose a clinic and a surgeon?Six things worth checking before you choose a clinic or surgeon
  • Does the surgeon have a licence to practise, and for which specialty was it issued? The licence is issued by the Croatian Medical Chamber (Hrvatska liječnička komora) and can be checked.
  • Who gives the anaesthesia, and are they present throughout the procedure? Regional and general anaesthesia may be given only by specialists in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care.
  • Where is the procedure carried out, and what does that facility have if something goes differently from the plan? Equipment for emergency interventions and resuscitation, a recovery unit, central gas supply.
  • What is included in the price, and what is paid separately? Anaesthesia, preoperative work-up, check-ups, dressing changes.
  • What happens if the result is not as agreed, and who then carries out the correction? Poliklinika Barbel's correction policy
  • Time to decide. There is no prescribed number of days between the examination and the procedure, because the path to a decision is not the same for everyone. For some one conversation is enough, others want to think it over for a few weeks or hear a second opinion — both are usual. It is just as usual to come for an examination and decide afterwards that the procedure is not for you. The date of the procedure is agreed only once you are sure, and until then nurse Martina and the doctor are available for any questions that come up.

Book a consultation

Head nurse Martina Šereg answers messages. She will gladly answer your questions and arrange the date of your first examination.

The first examination lasts 30 to 45 minutes on average. The surgeon examines the area you are concerned about, asks about illnesses, medicines and earlier operations, and talks with you about what you expect. If a procedure is appropriate and likely to help, you receive a plan: which procedure is proposed, under which anaesthesia, what recovery looks like and what is included in the price. If a procedure is not needed, you will hear that at the examination too. What happens at the first examination?
