Vaginoplasty
Vaginoplasty narrows a vagina that has widened after childbirth or with age, by joining muscles that have separated and removing excess lining. The aim is to restore tone and sensation during intercourse.
What concerns does it address?
How is it done?
Through an incision in the back wall of the vagina, the separated pelvic floor muscles are joined, the excess lining is removed and the wall is stitched. The perineum is often corrected in the same procedure.
→ Perineum and vaginal opening (introitus) correction
Without surgery
When the problem is a thinner, dry lining rather than width, fat transfer (lipotransfer) to the vaginal wall is done, alone or with PRP — your own fat tissue injected into the wall.
→ Profhilo, PRP and microneedling
When is the procedure not suitable?
A vaginal or urinary infection is treated before the procedure, and a recent, normal gynaecological report is required. Vaginoplasty does not treat urinary problems or a prolapsed uterus — if these are present, a gynaecologist assesses them before the procedure. If you plan to have more children, the procedure is postponed, because a new vaginal birth can undo the effect.
General reasons for postponing a procedure (pregnancy, breastfeeding, inflammation, a clotting disorder, smoking): When is a procedure postponed?
Anaesthesia
Before a procedure under general or regional anaesthesia, you are seen by the anaesthetist, who works full time at the clinic; the same doctor is also present during the procedure. The anaesthetic assessment and the anaesthesia for larger operations are included in the price of the procedure. What happens before, during and after anaesthesia is described on the Anaesthesia page.
Risks
Occasional — pain the first few times you have intercourse, slower healing of part of the wound, change in sensation, pain during intercourse that lasts longer (treated with gradual stretching and exercises), the need for an additional correction if the narrowing is too tight.
Rare — a connection between the back wall of the vagina and the rectum (fistula) that needs surgical repair, weakened function of the anal muscles, nerve injury.
Expected, and rare but serious → Risks and complications: what is the course of healing, and what is a complication?

Specialist and team
Specialty: plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.
When the procedure is done under sedation or general anaesthesia, the anaesthesia is led by a specialist in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care who works full time at the clinic.
In the operating theatre, the surgeon is assisted by head nurse Martina Šereg, with the help of nurses Kristina Jurešić and Mateja Tomorad, and in recovery the care assistant Mirjana Kovačić is with you. Martina also looks after preparation, scheduling and contact after the procedure.
Who will operate is decided at the examination, based on the findings and the type of procedure. You know the name of the surgeon before the procedure and meet them at the examination.
What happens at the examination?
The first examination lasts 30 to 45 minutes on average. The surgeon examines the area you are concerned about, asks about illnesses, medicines, allergies and previous operations, and talks with you about what you expect. If the procedure is appropriate and likely to help, you receive a plan: which procedure is proposed, under which anaesthesia, what recovery looks like and what is included in the price. If the procedure is not needed or would not give you what you expect, you will hear that at the examination too.
What if the result is not as agreed?
The result of a procedure is assessed at a follow-up visit, once the swelling has gone down and the scar has matured, not in the first weeks. If it differs from what was agreed at the examination, the same surgeon carries out the correction.

In the same visit
- Perineum and vaginal opening (introitus) correction — the perineum is often corrected in the same procedure, because both are the result of the same event.
- Labiaplasty (labia reduction) — labiaplasty is often done together with vaginoplasty, in the same procedure.
Frequently asked questions
How does vaginoplasty differ from correction of the vaginal opening? Correction of the vaginal opening is done on the opening and the perineum; vaginoplasty goes deeper, to the back wall. In most women after childbirth the problem is at the vaginal opening, so correcting the opening is enough. Vaginoplasty is done when the deeper part is widened as well — what is needed is seen at the examination.
Do pelvic floor exercises help instead of surgery? Exercises strengthen muscles that are intact, but they do not join muscles that have separated and do not remove excess lining. A gynaecologist or physiotherapist assesses how much can be achieved with exercises before a decision about the procedure.
Can it be done before another birth? A new vaginal birth can undo the result, so the procedure is planned after the last planned birth. If you plan to have children, tell us at the examination.
What does recovery look like? In the first days a sitting cushion helps. After using the toilet, the area is washed under running water — first the anal area, then the genitals. Tampons are not used until the wound has healed. The first few times you have intercourse may be sensitive. The exact course is determined at the follow-up visit.
Does the procedure affect urination? Brief stinging in the first days is possible. Urinary problems that exist before the procedure are not solved by vaginoplasty — a gynaecologist or urologist assesses them before the procedure.
How much does the result depend on care after the procedure? The larger the procedure, the more it depends on it, but it always does. Healing takes weeks and months and happens almost entirely at home, so the instructions you receive when you go home, about the wound, physical activity and the scar, are part of the procedure, not a recommendation.
Who is with me if I stay overnight in the clinic after the procedure? You stay overnight when the doctor judges it necessary and this is agreed with you. You then spend the night in a room in the recovery unit, which has a bed, a television and a bathroom. A nurse is with you all night and a doctor is on call. The overnight stay and night care are included in the price of the procedure.
