What concerns does it address?

How is it done?

A solution that constricts the blood vessels is injected into the fatty tissue, and the excess is then removed with a thin cannula through a puncture a few millimetres wide under the chin and, if needed, behind the earlobes; there are no scars. The skin then has to pull back onto its new base by itself — which is why assessing the skin before the procedure is essential. When the chin protrudes, the fatty tissue at the tip of the chin is reduced in the same procedure.

After the procedure, an elastic bandage is worn around the chin and neck for a few days so that the skin settles against the tissue beneath.

When is liposuction not enough?

Liposuction removes fat, not skin. If the skin of the neck is slack, it will hang after liposuction — neck tightening is then needed. → Mini facelift · Facelift — tightening the face and neck

When is the procedure not suitable?

Liposuction alone is not planned when the skin of the neck is slack and would not pull back — excess skin and visible “curtains” would remain; a neck lift is needed, on its own or with liposuction. It is also not done when the double chin is not made of fatty tissue but comes from the position of the chin or a slack muscle (platysma) — this is seen at the examination.

General reasons for postponing a procedure (pregnancy, breastfeeding, inflammation, a clotting disorder, smoking): When is a procedure postponed?

Anaesthesia

Before a procedure under general or regional anaesthesia, you are seen by the anaesthetist, who works full time at the clinic; the same doctor is also present during the procedure. The anaesthetic assessment and the anaesthesia for larger operations are included in the price of the procedure. What happens before, during and after anaesthesia is described on the Anaesthesia page.

Risks

Occasional — temporarily reduced sensation of the skin, an unevenness that smooths out, temporary stiffness.

Specialist and team

Specialty: plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.

When the procedure is done under sedation or general anaesthesia, the anaesthesia is led by a specialist in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care who works full time at the clinic.

In the operating theatre, the surgeon is assisted by head nurse Martina Šereg, with the help of nurses Kristina Jurešić and Mateja Tomorad, and in recovery the care assistant Mirjana Kovačić is with you. Martina also looks after preparation, scheduling and contact after the procedure.

Who will operate is decided at the examination, based on the findings and the type of procedure. You know the name of the surgeon before the procedure and meet them at the examination.

What happens at the examination?

The first examination lasts 30 to 45 minutes on average. The surgeon examines the area you are concerned about, asks about illnesses, medicines, allergies and previous operations, and talks with you about what you expect. If the procedure is appropriate and likely to help, you receive a plan: which procedure is proposed, under which anaesthesia, what recovery looks like and what is included in the price. If the procedure is not needed or would not give you what you expect, you will hear that at the examination too.

→ Examinations and diagnostics

What if the result is not as agreed?

The result of a procedure is assessed at a follow-up visit, once the swelling has gone down and the scar has matured, not in the first weeks. If it differs from what was agreed at the examination, the same surgeon carries out the correction.

Frequently asked questions

Does the double chin come back? Fat cells that have been removed do not come back. The remaining tissue follows body weight.

Why does a double chin not go away with weight loss? Because in some people it is an inherited place where fat collects — it stays even when weight drops. Liposuction removes those fat cells, which do not come back; the rest of the fatty tissue still follows weight.

How much does the result depend on care after the procedure? The larger the procedure, the more it depends on it, but it always does. Healing takes weeks and months and happens almost entirely at home, so the instructions you receive when you go home, about the wound, physical activity and the scar, are part of the procedure, not a recommendation.

When should you get in touch immediately?

These are the signs that distinguish a complication from expected healing. If any of them appears, contact the clinic the same day, without waiting for the check-up:

How to choose a clinic and a surgeon?Six things worth checking before you choose a clinic or surgeon
  • Does the surgeon have a licence to practise, and for which specialty was it issued? The licence is issued by the Croatian Medical Chamber (Hrvatska liječnička komora) and can be checked.
  • Who gives the anaesthesia, and are they present throughout the procedure? Regional and general anaesthesia may be given only by specialists in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care.
  • Where is the procedure carried out, and what does that facility have if something goes differently from the plan? Equipment for emergency interventions and resuscitation, a recovery unit, central gas supply.
  • What is included in the price, and what is paid separately? Anaesthesia, preoperative work-up, check-ups, dressing changes.
  • What happens if the result is not as agreed, and who then carries out the correction? Poliklinika Barbel's correction policy
  • Time to decide. There is no prescribed number of days between the examination and the procedure, because the path to a decision is not the same for everyone. For some one conversation is enough, others want to think it over for a few weeks or hear a second opinion — both are usual. It is just as usual to come for an examination and decide afterwards that the procedure is not for you. The date of the procedure is agreed only once you are sure, and until then nurse Martina and the doctor are available for any questions that come up.
