Testicular implant

A testicular implant replaces the appearance of a missing testicle — after removal or in congenital absence. If a testicle has been removed earlier for any reason, an implant can be placed where it was; it is placed in the same procedure as the removal of the testicle or in a separate procedure.

What concerns does it address?

When is it implanted?

→ Orchidectomy

How is it done?

The implant — a silicone insert in the shape and size of a testicle — is placed through a short incision at the top of the scrotum and is fixed with a stitch to the bottom of the scrotum so that it does not move. The size is chosen to match the other testicle. It takes about half an hour. In the first weeks supportive underwear is worn.

When is the procedure not suitable?

The implant is not placed while there is active inflammation or an unhealed wound on the scrotum, because infection around the implant is the most common reason an implant has to be removed. After removal of a testicle for inflammation or a tumour, we wait on average three to six months for the tissue to heal and for treatment to be completed. If the scrotum has become tight with scarring after earlier operations, there is sometimes no room for a full-size implant, so we discuss a smaller one. With uncontrolled diabetes or smoking, the risk of infection is higher.

Anaesthesia

Before a procedure under general or regional anaesthesia, you are seen by the anaesthetist, who works full time at the clinic; the same doctor is also present during the procedure. The anaesthetic assessment and the anaesthesia for larger operations are included in the price of the procedure. What happens before, during and after anaesthesia is described on the Anaesthesia page.

Specialist and team

Specialty: urology — examinations, diagnostics and procedures.

When the procedure is done under sedation or general anaesthesia, the anaesthesia is led by a specialist in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care who works full time at the clinic.

In the operating theatre, the surgeon is assisted by head nurse Martina Šereg, with the help of nurses Kristina Jurešić and Mateja Tomorad, and in recovery the care assistant Mirjana Kovačić is with you. Martina also looks after preparation, scheduling and contact after the procedure.

Who will operate is decided at the examination, based on the findings and the type of procedure. You know the name of the surgeon before the procedure and meet them at the examination.

What happens at the examination?

A urological examination has two parts: a conversation about your symptoms, past illnesses and medicines, and a clinical examination. Depending on the findings, an ultrasound is done straight away, in the same visit, if needed. You receive the findings at the examination.

→ Examinations and diagnostics

What if the result is not as agreed?

The result of a procedure is assessed at a follow-up visit, once the swelling has gone down and the scar has matured, not in the first weeks. If it differs from what was agreed at the examination, the same surgeon carries out the correction.

Frequently asked questions

Can the implant be felt? To the touch it is soft and similar in weight to a testicle, so it is barely different from the other testicle. In the first months it can feel firmer until the tissue around it settles.

What is the implant made of? Soft silicone, or a silicone shell filled with saline, similar in shape and weight to a testicle. It comes in several sizes; we choose the one that matches the other side.

Can it be placed in a young man? The implant is placed in adults, when the other side has reached its final size. Urological examinations and procedures at Poliklinika Barbel are done only for adults.

Can the implant move or burst? Upward displacement is possible if the stitch that fixes it gives way, which is rare. Rupture of a silicone implant is very rare and does not harm health, but the implant is then replaced.

Does the implant need to be replaced? No. It is placed with the intention that it lasts a lifetime. Replacement is needed only in the case of infection or rupture, or if you want a different size.

How much does the result depend on care after the procedure? The larger the procedure, the more it depends on it, but it always does. Healing takes weeks and months and happens almost entirely at home, so the instructions you receive when you go home, about the wound, physical activity and the scar, are part of the procedure, not a recommendation.

When should you get in touch immediately?

These are the signs that distinguish a complication from expected healing. If any of them appears, contact the clinic the same day, without waiting for the check-up:

How to choose a clinic and a surgeon?Six things worth checking before you choose a clinic or surgeon
  • Does the surgeon have a licence to practise, and for which specialty was it issued? The licence is issued by the Croatian Medical Chamber (Hrvatska liječnička komora) and can be checked.
  • Who gives the anaesthesia, and are they present throughout the procedure? Regional and general anaesthesia may be given only by specialists in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care.
  • Where is the procedure carried out, and what does that facility have if something goes differently from the plan? Equipment for emergency interventions and resuscitation, a recovery unit, central gas supply.
  • What is included in the price, and what is paid separately? Anaesthesia, preoperative work-up, check-ups, dressing changes.
  • What happens if the result is not as agreed, and who then carries out the correction? Poliklinika Barbel's correction policy
  • Time to decide. There is no prescribed number of days between the examination and the procedure, because the path to a decision is not the same for everyone. For some one conversation is enough, others want to think it over for a few weeks or hear a second opinion — both are usual. It is just as usual to come for an examination and decide afterwards that the procedure is not for you. The date of the procedure is agreed only once you are sure, and until then nurse Martina and the doctor are available for any questions that come up.

Book a consultation

Head nurse Martina Šereg answers messages. She will gladly answer your questions and arrange the date of your first examination.

The first examination lasts 30 to 45 minutes on average. The surgeon examines the area you are concerned about, asks about illnesses, medicines and earlier operations, and talks with you about what you expect. If a procedure is appropriate and likely to help, you receive a plan: which procedure is proposed, under which anaesthesia, what recovery looks like and what is included in the price. If a procedure is not needed, you will hear that at the examination too. What happens at the first examination?
