Lip fillers

A filler is a gel based on hyaluronic acid that is injected into the lips to give them volume or correct their shape. The effect is visible straight away and is temporary — the body breaks the filler down over months.

What concerns does it address?

Who is it for?

Lip fillers are used for thin lips, loss of volume with age, asymmetry and a lip border that has receded.

How is it done?

The filler is injected into the lip with a fine needle or a cannula, in the amount and at the sites agreed before the procedure.

We use only hyaluronic fillers registered in Croatia — the kind an enzyme can dissolve if the result is not right. For every product you receive a declaration with its name and batch number; this is your right and your safeguard for later. We do not put permanent fillers in lips: they cannot be removed, and problems can appear years afterwards.

→ Lip silicone removal

How do we do it at Barbel? When real volume is wanted, we recommend your own fat tissue — in two, sometimes three sessions — and we use filler, which is a gel and easily enters the surface layer of the skin, only to define the lip border. This gives lips that look like yours, without an “overfilled” border, and uses less filler. After fifty, the aim is most often not to enlarge the lips but to restore the volume they had: such lips look fresher and have fewer fine lines above the border.

→ Lip fat transfer

When is the procedure not suitable?

Filler is not placed in lips that already contain permanent filler or silicone — the reaction is unpredictable and makes the problem worse. It is not done during an active cold sore on the lip; if you are prone to cold sores, protection is arranged before the procedure. It is done in adults.

General reasons for postponing a procedure (pregnancy, breastfeeding, inflammation, a clotting disorder, smoking): When is a procedure postponed?

What can be done if the result is not right?

A hyaluronic filler can be dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase. This means the result is not irreversible.

Filler dissolving and removal

What can the procedure not do?

A filler adds volume. It does not change the position of the lip, does not shorten the distance between the nose and the lip, and does not deal with lines around the mouth caused by movement.

Risks

Expected — swelling and tenderness in the first days, sometimes bruising. The final shape is seen only once the swelling has gone. Occasional — uneven distribution of the filler, a small lump under the skin.

What happens at the examination?

Before the treatment there is an examination: the doctor examines the area, asks about illnesses, medicines and allergies, and talks with you about what you expect. How many treatments make sense in your case is agreed at the examination.

→ Examinations and diagnostics

What if the result is not as agreed?

The result of a procedure is assessed at a follow-up visit, once the swelling has gone down and the scar has matured, not in the first weeks. If it differs from what was agreed at the examination, the same surgeon carries out the correction.

Frequently asked questions

How long do lip fillers last? On average six to twelve months, depending on the type of filler, the amount, and how much the lips move. Lips are in constant motion, so filler breaks down in them faster than in the cheeks.

Will it be obvious that I have had it done? It depends on the amount. Lips that look “done” are the result of too much filler, or of filler placed in the whole lip instead of the border. It is better to place less and top up later.

When should you get in touch immediately?

These are the signs that distinguish a complication from expected healing. If any of them appears, contact the clinic the same day, without waiting for the check-up:

How to choose a clinic and a surgeon?Six things worth checking before you choose a clinic or surgeon
  • Does the surgeon have a licence to practise, and for which specialty was it issued? The licence is issued by the Croatian Medical Chamber (Hrvatska liječnička komora) and can be checked.
  • Who gives the anaesthesia, and are they present throughout the procedure? Regional and general anaesthesia may be given only by specialists in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care.
  • Where is the procedure carried out, and what does that facility have if something goes differently from the plan? Equipment for emergency interventions and resuscitation, a recovery unit, central gas supply.
  • What is included in the price, and what is paid separately? Anaesthesia, preoperative work-up, check-ups, dressing changes.
  • What happens if the result is not as agreed, and who then carries out the correction? Poliklinika Barbel's correction policy
  • Time to decide. There is no prescribed number of days between the examination and the procedure, because the path to a decision is not the same for everyone. For some one conversation is enough, others want to think it over for a few weeks or hear a second opinion — both are usual. It is just as usual to come for an examination and decide afterwards that the procedure is not for you. The date of the procedure is agreed only once you are sure, and until then nurse Martina and the doctor are available for any questions that come up.

Head nurse Martina Šereg answers messages. She will gladly answer your questions and arrange the date of your first examination.

The first examination lasts 30 to 45 minutes on average. The surgeon examines the area you are concerned about, asks about illnesses, medicines and earlier operations, and talks with you about what you expect. If a procedure is appropriate and likely to help, you receive a plan: which procedure is proposed, under which anaesthesia, what recovery looks like and what is included in the price. If a procedure is not needed, you will hear that at the examination too. What happens at the first examination?
